The English Language Component

To do both Diploma programmes, a high proficiency in the English Language is a critical prerequisite.  A 550 TOEFL or a 6.0 IELTS score will allow a student to move directly into the Diploma programme.

Students obtaining less than the required scored, will be required to do an “Academic English Programme” before they move to Diploma.  Each level of the Acadmic English programme will take approximately ten weeks for completion.

CSAL Academic English Programme

Based on the Canadian International School's English Language Model in Singapore, CSAL Academic English has been designed for non-native speakers of English want to improve their communication skills for entry into college or university programmes, or further professional development.

This English Programme will include in-class instruction as well as computer assisted language learning. Student will be required to sit for English placement test and the results will be correlated with an Academic English level. Each level is approximately 265 hours of instruction. Upon completion of this programme, academically qualified students will progress into diploma studies at CSAL.

Academic English Level 1

CSAL Academic English 1 introduces the students to English for College Preparation. This is start of the Academic Road to a College Education taught entirely in English. Students learn essential vocabulary and language structures that allow them to communicate in many areas of life and work and they are introduced to business and college topics to help prepare them for full time tertiary study, in which language of instruction and performance is English.

Academic English Level 2

CSAL Academic English 2 is a reinforcement of language learned in the introductory course and presents students with the next level of language study. In addition, it gives students exposure to business and employment topics and discusses leadership and hospitality industry. Students have the opportunity to learn how to read and produce a variety of business documents necessary for a career in the business world.

Academic English Level 3

CSAL Academic English 3 carries the student to an upper intermediate level of grammar and language structure and teaches the students to understand produce more difficult and involved business documents like reports and evaluations. This course introduces tourism, world geography and social issues that affect people both locally and globally. This focus leads to a study in the effects of globalization on various communities. At this level, more challenging reading and critical think skills are developed as the study of psychology becomes part of the course work.

Academic English Level 4

CSAL Academic English 4 is the highest level of College Preparatory English. In this level, students learn the most advanced grammar and syntactical structure and learn to apply this knowledge to college level literacy and spoken/written production. Essential tertiary skills are leaned such as research methods, understanding text types for overall literacy and speech / writing for specific audiences. The end of CSAL Advanced English prepares students for College English or University entrance exams like TOEFL or IELTS. CSAL Advanced English prepares students for the formats and expectations of these exams and readies them for the entrance into full English language college life.

CSAL College English

CSAL College English is an advanced English course that is included as a general breath elective subject for the Diploma in Business Management. This subject is 135 hours of teacher instruction with focus on grammar, academic writing, listening and note taking.  As well, students will be introduced to the world of English literature short stories.  Students will learn to analyze a variety of short stories in areas such as audience, critical opinion, theoretical and interpretive strategies and identification of literal elements such as imagery, simile, metaphor, symbolism and personification. 

Entry / Admission Requirements

  • GCE O Levels, GCE A Levels, or a High School Certificate or equivalent;
  • High beginner level of English;
  • For International Students only: TOEFL (Test of English as a Second Language) score between 97 - 200 Computer-Based Test (CBT) or 400 - 540 Paper-Based Test (PBT) or equivalent;
  • For International Students only: Placement testing in reading, grammar, writing, and speaking to determine level of study prior to program start.
